The Zodiac War · Episode 1
The Night the Crown Vanished
The Solar Palace · The eve of the Celestial Convergence

At midnight, the Celestial Crown stopped shining. At one minute past, it was gone.
King Leo stood beneath the empty dome while twelve alarm bells rang across the Solar Palace. Gold-robed guards sealed every door, but their eyes kept returning to him. Only a ruler of the Solar bloodline could pass the crown's sacred flame. Only Leo could have touched it without burning.
The throne room had been prepared for celebration. Twelve banners hung from the circular balcony, one for every kingdom, and a feast waited untouched beneath crystal chandeliers. Now the music had stopped. Beyond the glass ceiling, the constellations flickered out one by one, as though the sky itself were withdrawing from the gathering.
Aries arrived first, still dressed in crimson battle armor. Sparks traced the edges of his curved horns as he pushed through the guards. ‘Tell me this is a test,’ he said. Leo did not answer. The friendship between the Sun King and the Fire Commander had survived three border wars, but silence made suspicion grow faster than any flame.
Scorpio emerged from the darkest archway without making a sound. He knelt beside the vacant pedestal and drew one gloved finger through the ash. The mark beneath it was not one of the twelve. It showed a serpent wrapped around a broken star.
‘The Thirteenth Gate,’ Scorpio whispered. The name had been forbidden for a thousand years. Virgo crossed the room to examine the mark, but a cold wind scattered the ash before she could touch it. Somewhere below the palace, stone groaned against stone.
Then the great doors exploded inward. A wounded messenger collapsed across the marble, clutching a strip of black cloth embroidered with the golden sun of Leo's own royal guard. He tried to speak, but the words dissolved into a cloud of silver dust. Every ruler in the chamber turned toward the Sun King.
Leo recognized the cloth. It came from a ceremonial uniform locked in a chamber that answered only to his voice. He also recognized the tiny burn along its edge: a mark left by the crown whenever someone tried to carry it beyond the palace walls.
Aries placed one hand on his spear. ‘Open the royal vault,’ he ordered. Leo looked from his oldest ally to the empty pedestal, then to the darkness beneath Scorpio's feet. If he opened the vault, the secret hidden there would end his reign. If he refused, the twelve kingdoms would believe he had stolen the crown.
Far beneath them, beyond tunnels erased from every map, something ancient opened its eyes. For the first time in a millennium, the Thirteenth Gate heard the sound it had been waiting for: twelve rulers beginning to distrust one another.
